Success is Bad

As I filled up my gas tank this morning, I had an ephiany.  We really are punishing success and rewarding failure in this country.  The last eight years were spent reminding us how "evil" Big Oil was for daring to make a profit.  The war was for Big Oil.  The Bush administration was in Big Oil's pocket. Big Oil was getting tax deductions and credits??  No!! I'm not sure who exactly qualified as "Big Oil," but he was certainly universally hated.

Fast-forward one election, several months, and a new administration. Billions and billions of dollars have been heaped upon companies like AIG and Citibank.  The banking and auto industries have been paid ridiculous amounts of our money.  We're told it's because they're "too big to fail." The US government pretty much owns Citibank now.

Why are we rewarding companies with failed business plans?  And why would we vilify companies make record profits?

It's not just companies either.  The stimulus plan gives more money to unemployment and welfare, food stamps and WIC. We're going to be paying for the mortgages of people that were too stupid to read or understand a contract.  We continue to reward bad choices.  Dave Ramsey said it best this morning.  You cannot take away failure without taking away success.

Freedom of Choice and the Nation's Social Life

The Roe v. Wade decision also expanded the opportunities for women to participate equally in society. In 1992, in Planned Parenthood v. Casey (505 U.S. 833), the Supreme Court observed that, `[t]he ability of women to participate equally in the economic and social life of the Nation has been facilitated by their ability to control their reproductive lives.'.

-The Freedom of Choice Act
(H.R. 1964/S. 1173)

Every part of H.R. 1964/S. 1173 is disturbing to me.  None more so than the statement above.  It is, quite possibly, the most devastating thing Congress and the Courts have declared.  They are so confident they no longer hide behind the "health of the mother" defense.  It really does come down to a woman's right to a social life, unencumbered by the needs and demands of a child.

Unintended pregnancy is a reality.  We're humans, afterall.  We have wants, needs and the ability to make stupid choices thanks to God and free will.  It would be foolish to assume we can stop unprotected sex.  We cannot legislate morality.  But Congress seems to have cornered the market on rewarding immoral behavior.

Was it really the intention of our founding fathers to make abortion more accessible?  Do we really want to funnel federal dollars to overseas abortions?  Reversing the Hyde Amendment will open the flood gates here.  Medicaid funded abortions will be a reality.  That's right...tax dollar supported abortion.  All in the name of the nation's social life.

Women were granted the most amazing gift by God.  He enabled us with the ability to carry the lives He created.  He entrusted us with the sacred duty of nurturing and tending to little human beings from the moment of conception.  There is no greater bond, no greater love than that of a mother for her unborn child.  It was His will.

I firmly believe that there is no greater privilage than raising children.  It is an honor and a joy to be an involved and loving parent.  It's also really hard!  Intended or not, children will surprise you and challenge you.  There really is no way to plan for everything a baby throws your way.  For me it means not working outside the home.  It means that my social life is reduced to playdates, dance class, and doctor's appointments.  Pregnancy wakes you to the reality Congress and NOW refuse to see.  It really isn't all about you.

Congress has reduced the incredible reward of baring a child to nothing more than an economic and social ball and chain.

What must He think?
